Community Backgreens
Whilst Edible Estates is now focussed on community growing models in council estates, we previously developed the ‘community backgreen’ model is an approach to community gardening in 19th century tenemental areas.
Between 2004 & 2012, Edinburgh Community Backgreens project supported tenement dwellers to work with their neighbours to establish community gardens in their tenement backgreens. Over the eight years, we helped set up fifteen ‘community backgreen’ projects in Gorgie Dalry, Leith and Marchmont.
The community backgreen model of working in tenemental areas was inspired by research of the Yard Association’s of Copenhagen, which contributed to the regeneration of neighbourhoods such as Norrebro in the city centre.
