Broomhouse Growers

Broomhouse Growers is a project of the Broomhouse Community Growing Association supported by Space and South West Edible Estates.  We are a group of Broomhouse residents, our goal is to establish a community run market gardening and ‘community food hub’ project by and for people of Broomhouse.  We have started at a small community garden behind Broomhouse Market which will provide a hub for the management of several growing sites around Broomhouse. Fruit and vegetables grown at the garden/s will be used for shared community meals, distributed between the growers and/or good causes such as the local food bank.

Community Growing

We have a group of about a dozen volunteers who are constructing the growing beds, tool shed and polytunnels.  We are always on the look out for new members.  We provide training and tools.  This project is for folks who like to:

  • Grow fruit and veg for themselves and their local community
  • Be out in the fresh air and get some exercise
  • Be around other folk in a positive, safe and supportive environment
  • Be part of a community project

We have identified several other greenspaces around Broomhouse which show promise as community growing sites, and potentially a Neighbourhood Garden.  We will be looking to develop these sites between this year and next when we have secured sufficient funding.

Community Meals

We are working in partnership with Space at the Broomhouse Hub who are delivering monthly free community meals.  We provide fresh produce from our garden.  For more information about the community meals contact Helene van der Ploeg.
