Set against the backdrop of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) taking place in Glasgow over late October-early November 2021, and as part of their 1.5 Degree Challenge, Film Access Scotland invited schools, community organisations and youth groups to create unique, 90-second short films showcasing their thoughts about climate change. and demonstrating its impact on individual and community levels.
Filmed by our Community Engagement Officer Alan, one of our Murrayburn and Hailesland community gardeners, Carol, showcased the community garden and explained, from her perspective, the benefits of the garden, and what it means to her.

As well as creating ‘place’ in the community, the garden plays an important role in how the community can respond to climate change. The opportunity to grow food locally is a key part of any 20-minute neighbourhood, a model which would aid in reducing carbon emissions in Edinburgh, and which Wester Hailes has been identified by The City of Edinburgh Council as a suitable candidate for. You can read more about the benefits of 20-minute neighbourhoods, as well as how our projects work towards establishing that model within Wester Hailes here. The video was shown at a civic reception event in Glasgow, and at an EVOC panel event at which both Alan and Carol shared their perspectives on the benefits of the Murrayburn and Hailesland Community Garden to the local area and how it has become an asset to the community. They also got the chance to listen to other organisations’ and individuals’ climate-focused initiatives across the city, each with a view to making communities more sustainable, with a particular focus on the circular economy and the importance of reusing over recycling. The importance of partnership work was highlighted as key to the future success of climate focused, community-centred initiatives. All submitted films will be screened at the Edinburgh Filmhouse on 27th November as part of a showcasing event that will present commendations to everyone involved. You can view all of the short film submissions made via Film Access Scotland
