Sunshine On Leith Gardens is the last ‘community backgreen’ site developed by Edinburgh Community Backgreens Association before it wound up. Unlike the other fourteen community gardens set-up by ECBA, it was possible to create a pathway into the site which allowed for the project to be opened up to the wider community. SOL Gardens was instrumental in the development of the ‘community food growing’ model which Edible Estates now promote in council estates.
The site incorporates a shared tool shed, community orchards set out using the ‘forest gardening’ approach, and 38 raised beds. The site is managed by a growers association which is made up of approximately 40 members which live at the site and in the neighbouring community.
