In November 2021 after long delays due to all of the disruption we experienced in 2020 and 2021 Leith Community Growers were delighted to partner with Friends of Montgomery Street Park and Edinburgh & Lothians Regional Equality Council to get together on a crisp winter morning to plant a hedge on the north side of the park.
The hedge is a mixture of British native trees and shrubs and will create a mixed habitat with a variety of food and shelter opportunities for local wildlife and hardy local foragers! The hedge is made up of Crab Apple, Wild Cherry, Dog Rose, Hazel, Rowan, Dogwood and Blackthorn.
We shared a lovely couple of hours with local people who were all keen to add a mixed area to a well used and much loved park. We hope to spend more time in Montgomery Street park help the Friends with litter picking as well as planting and developing the area for local; people and our pollinators, birds and other wildlife.
Patrick, Leith Community Growers Development OfficerMontgomery Street Park is a great local resource that is well loved and well used, especially in the recent lockdowns. It was great to come together as a community to plant some wildlife friendly mixed hadging that will benefit the park, the local community and wildlife for many years to come.
