Craigmillar Community Food Hub

The Community Alliance Trust (CAT) is a community development trust established to promote and deliver community regeneration activities in Greater Craigmillar.  Since 2014, we have delivered a community greenspace initiative called Craigmillar Edible Estates, which has resulted in the set up of two neighbourhood garden projects in Magdalene and Bingham.

In 2018, we established a small community growing project in the grounds of Bristol Memorial Church.  This has evolved into a small ‘community food hub project’, with a group of local residents growing food and sharing the food at regular community meals in the church hall.

CAT has received funding from the Scottish Governments Investing in Communities Fund to support and develop the community food hub project over several years (up to March 2022).  We will work in partnership with Bristo Memorial Church, the staff and participants Craigmillar Food Bank, the volunteer’s of the Craigmillar Community Growing Group, and other local stakeholders to develop the Craigmillar Community Food Hub project.  The project will build on the strengths of the partners to provide a dignified response to food poverty in Craigmillar.

Understandably the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many challenges for our communities accessing local, sustainable, healthy food. Therefore we are delighted to have worked in partnership with many local agencies and people to support them with fresh produce from our community gardens.

The project is currently working in partnership with local agencies to set up local ‘Food Pantries’ as a dignified response to food insecurity in Craigmillar. This project will seek to be an ‘alternative’ to a food bank which will allow individuals to become members and pay a small weekly fee to access a wide range of food plus free produce from the community gardens.

If you’d like to know more, get involved or volunteer as part of our Craigmillar Community Food hub and Pantry project please get in touch with the Community Food Officer Catherine, Catherine@communityalliancetrust.org.uk
