Leith & Lochend Home Grown is a project of Edible Estates to support folk to grow vegetables at home whilst their locked down by Covid 19. The project is being delivered by our community gardener Patrick Dunne with the support of Katie Smith, and other volunteers.
We will provide households with a Home Grown starter pack, containing seeds, compost and pots (see below). To receive a starter pack, fill in the form on the right, indicating which you want. Our community gardeners will give instructions and advice through our Facebook Page and a Group. They will publish a series of videos, and answer questions for those who join the Facebook Group. We also encourage more experienced growers to join the project to share their knowledge and inspire us with their own growing at home.
Facebook Group
To participate you need to join the Facebook Group, which you will find by pressing the ‘Visit Group’ button from the Leith & Lochend Growers Facebook Page, follow the link – www.facebook.com/leithcommunitygrowing
Please Note: We will be doing our last of these year Home Grown Starter Pack Pick Up on the 15th of July. After that, there will be opportunities to pick up seeds at future events.
Small Starter Pack
The small starter pack is for anyone who wants to try some quick-growing salad plants that take up very little space. It makes an ideal learning activity for young kids. The pack includes:-
- six 9cm pots filled with seed compost,
- plant labels;
- seeds for: mixed lettuce leaves, spinach, mustard and peas.
We provide the small starter packs for free, and can deliver them to folk who are shielding. Folk who are not shielding, we would expect to Pick Up, unless they have a mobility issue.
Large Starter Pack
The Large Pack is for households with access to more growing space, say an area of your backgreen that gets some sun, and your neighbours would be ok with you digging over, or perhaps the front step of your tenement, where you can put out the pots and grow bags. The pack includes :-
- two seed trays with module inserts, for growing plants from seed that you can then plant out in the garden,
- a 40l bag of compost,
- plant labels,
- up to five grow-bags for tomatoes, courgettes, peas or bean plants
- Seed packets
We don’t deliver the large starter packs, they must be picked up from our Pick Up Point, see below. We appreciate if folk can donate to towards the costs of the starter pack. £5-£10, depending on what you can afford.
Donations
We welcome donations to support Home Grown in Leith & Lochend. More funds will also allow us to deliver more starter packs, helping more people.
Pick Up Point
We have partnered with the Out of the Blue Drill Hall on Dalmeny Street, (https://goo.gl/maps/jaq5tWsM9JbkCQJC9) to provide a Pick Up Point for the Starter Packs. Once you have filled in the request form, we will get in touch to let you know the time and day for pick up. We will be following guidelines of social distancing etc to keep folk safe.
